Whenua First

Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua

— Care for the land, care for the people, go forward

Whenua first is a kaupapa (principal) we bring to life in our business.

We believe our role on the whenua (land) of Kapiti Island, and in te ao (the world), is one of kaitiakitanga or guardianship. We're not here as owners, but as temporary guardians, and it's our responsibility to take care of the ecosystem which takes care of us.

One way we do that is to ensure all the packaging and postage materials we use have as little impact on te taiao (the environment) as possible. We invest time and energy in making this so. Our jars are glass, harder to post and care for than plastic, but aligned with our kaupapa. Our stone-paper labels are made from off-cuts and waste from the building industry and will bio-degrade back to lime dust over time. Our clear labels are made from corn starch and other biodegradable plant materials. These labels are more expensive than other options, but again, we believe that's a part of the cost of doing business responsibly and an obligation of our role as kaitiaki.

Please help make our investment and energy worthwhile by composting, recycling, or reusing any packaging associated with your purchase from Kapiti Island Honey. Please think Whenua First.

Ngā mihi nui,

Thank you very much.
